In the recent LEGO July Hit List post, I mentioned that I had made the final update with a newly updated set picking system.

If you haven’t looked at that hit list, you should. It is the final update for sets retiring at the end of this month:

It is time to explain how the system has changed (again) and why I made this change.

Before we do that, I think it is important to discuss how we got here:

Pre-2022

Prior to documenting my LEGO investing portfolio, I just bought what I thought looked cool when it went on sale prior to retirement.

I didn’t have a system and this newsletter didn’t exist.

2022 - 2024

I dove into any data I could find and found the following:

1. Sets over $100 appreciated quicker than sets below $100

2. Sets below $100 produced higher return on investment in the long run

3. Sets with higher than average demand performed better than those that didn’t

4. Shelf/set life did not correlate to better returns (I had assumed it did)

Demand is doubly important because sets with high demand perform better but they also allow for easier profit taking in retirement.

Liquidity is a hidden metric that is often overlooked by most LEGO investors.

I then created a demand threshold (using Amazon sales rank data) that every LEGO set must hit for me to invest in it.

The result? We outperformed the average three years in a row (all documented in this newsletter).

2025

In early 2025 I realized that despite performing above average, the system had some issues.

It kept missing sets from themes like NINJAGO, DUPLO, and Sonic that were performing better than just about every other set from every other theme.

I didn’t like this.

That is when I realized that every theme should be treated differently.

There is no way the supply of every theme is the same.

LEGO does not make the same number of NINJAGO sets as they make for Star Wars.

They make much less NINJAGO.

For that reason, the demand I’m looking for from NINJAGO can be lower but not TOO low because of liquidity.

I want to be able to sell my investments without waiting months for my sets to sell.

Using data from 2022-2024 I created theme specific thresholds for my 2025 investments.

It is still early, but the 2025 system is currently outperforming the old system by a solid margin.

2026

While the change I made in 2025 was a good one, I still felt like it was missing something.

I spent a countless number of hours looking at every metric I could think of but nothing generated a better return when I tested it historically.

That all changed when I finally decided to look at price.

I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it earlier, but I’m glad I did.

You see, when I first got into LEGO investing there wasn’t a lot of information out there about it.

The content you could find was made by a couple people on YouTube who no longer make videos.

None of them had a “system”.

The only rule they had was to only buy sets when they were available for 30% OFF or more.

20% OFF wasn’t good enough for them.

It’s an obvious rule, the less you pay, the more you stand to gain.

The problem is that most of the investors I paid attention to would buy tons of terrible sets that had NO demand because they got it at 50% OFF or more.

They were missing the demand and liquidity that my system identified as important for investing with a sizeable chunk of money.

They often missed out on some amazing investments that never hit 30% OFF, while I was cashing in on them.

The hit list you are about to see below is the list of LEGO sets my set picking system likes most for investing that are set retire in JULY 2026.

Normally we don’t split the year up like this, but LEGO has decided to shift 100+ sets to a July retirement date.

The following list is created by:

1. Looking at a giant list of sets expected to retire

2. Inputting Amazon sales rank data (i.e. demand) into my custom set picking system and letting it spit out which sets it thinks will perform best

3. Extrapolating “# of sets sold in the past month” for sets that don’t have sales rank data

4. Picking demand thresholds for each theme to adhere to based on prior performance and estimated supply data

Does this system catch ALL of the best sets every year? No.

However, it has outperformed the average for the last three years by a large margin as documented in my monthly market update series.

This update is important not only because it is the final version of this hit list, but I have also made changes to my set picking system.

I have spent the last two weeks testing new inputs and looking for new signals that point to a LEGO set potentially performing above average as an investment.

Turns out I found some.

I believe we are moving to a world where demand is less important (but still important) and cost basis is more important (it was still important).

This means having an eye on MORE sets, but being picky with which sets I actually purchase.

I used to use my hit list as a list of sets that I was going to own no matter what.

It will now be used as a list of sets to watch and then buy if the price is right and only if the price is right.

I will detail the data that led me to make this decision in a post later this week.

Next month, I will publish the first iteration of a second hit list for sets that retire at the end of December.

The format below for listing hit list sets is as follows:

• Theme

  • List of sets my system likes

Let’s dive in.

Architecture

Target position size/set: ~1% of portfolio

Demand threshold: 5 (down from 14)

Changes:

• Added The Great Pyramid of Giza 21058 (threshold change)

We used to only chase sets from Architecture that were heavily in demand. We reducing that threshold heavily now, which has resulted in adding the Giza set.

The past several years have shown that lower demanded sets outperform the average if you buy at the right price.

What is the “right price” you ask?

Generally speaking, it is an all-time low price that we have never seen before or at least 20% OFF (more on this idea later in the week).

For the Statue of Liberty, that is at or below $80.

For the Giza set, that is below ~$100.

You will notice I’ve added a buy price target column into the spreadsheet.

Welcome to my monthly Pokémon update where I monitor the prices and trends of sealed Pokémon cards released within the last five years or so.

I prefer to invest in sealed product only because sealed product carries a premium that increases in magnitude as any given product ages.

This is best evidenced by older booster boxes in any TCG being worth far more than the value of cards you can expect to receive inside while opening them.

With newer boxes, you have a higher chance to break even or even profit.

With older boxes, that chance decreases.

This is primarily due to scarcity. Once there are far less sealed boxes in existence, the scarcity of the box outweighs what could possibly be inside.

As I type this, there are 51 LEGO sets that “retired” on December 31st, 2025 that Amazon still has in stock nearly six months later.

This is a trend that has gained steam over the last few years. Back in the day, Amazon would run out stock very near the retirement date on almost every set.

It appears those days are long gone.

This year it is more apparent than ever that they’ve changed their strategy and now place larger orders for many sets right before retirement.

I don’t blame them, I’d do this too.

Many of these sets don’t last a full year post-retirement, so they still end up profitable within 12 months… but some do.

In past years, LEGO retired almost all of their sets each year on December 31st.

Sure, a few retired in July every year but it wasn’t common.

Most of the sets that did retire were not the type you’d want to invest in anyway.

Well, this year that changed.

They are retiring nearly 150 sets on July 31st and several of them are absolutely the type of sets you want to own before they retire.

The difference with a July retiree is that we don’t have a summer Black Friday with heavy discounts to take advantage of.

Buying today means buying at full price or a 20% discount at best.

This means you have to be surgical with your buys to ensure the most amount of profit possible and to avoid buying too early or at a higher price than you should.

I prefer to invest in sealed product only because sealed product carries a premium that increases in magnitude as any given product ages.

This is best evidenced by older booster boxes in any TCG being worth far more than the value of cards you can expect to receive inside while opening them.

With newer boxes, you have a higher chance to break even or even profit.

With older boxes, that chance decreases.

This is primarily due to scarcity. Once there are far less sealed boxes in existence, the scarcity of the box outweighs what could possibly be inside.

The hit list you are about to see below is the list of LEGO sets my set picking system likes most for investing that are set retire in JULY this year.

Normally we don’t split the year up like I am now, but LEGO has decided to shift 100+ sets to a July retirement date.

The following list is created by:

1. Looking at a giant list of sets expected to retire

2. Inputting Amazon sales rank data (i.e. demand) into my custom set picking system and letting it spit out which sets it thinks will perform best

3. Extrapolating “# of sets sold in the past month” for sets that don’t have sales rank data

4. Picking demand thresholds for each theme to adhere to based on prior performance and estimated supply data

Does this system catch ALL of the best sets every year? No.

However, it has outperformed the average for the last three years by a large margin as documented in my monthly market update series.

I am finalizing this July list next month in June (originally scheduled for May).

In July, I will publish the first iteration of a second hit list for sets that retire at the end of December.

The format below for listing hit list sets is as follows:

We had another improvement in demand here. I am not in a rush to create a position though with it being available on the LEGO website without a “Retiring Soon” tag.

You can only get 5 of them per account on Amazon though, so I’ll likely buy some if we can get them for under $100.

Welcome to the TIE LEGO Investment Portfolio Update for April 2026 where I show you which LEGO sets I personally own.

(Notice how no one on YouTube does that? I wonder why…)

There are a million ways to invest, but my strategy is as follows:

1. Buy heavy quantity of sets from my hit list in Q4 (see the 2026 list here)

2. Hold for 12-24 months (longer if needed)

3. Sell on Amazon and/or eBay

It’s the perfect mix of appreciation and compounding.
